Congress general secretary Rahul Gandhi hit the campaign trail in Maharashtra on Tuesday by addressing two public rallies-one in Wardha and another in chief minister Ashok Chavan's home turf Nanded. With the crowd swaying to Jai Ho, the Congress poll anthem, Rahul harped on the party's central theme of "aam aadmi" and asked voters to bring the UPA government back to power so that "the good work for the common man could be continued''. Rahul spoke about controversial issues but did not get into the details. Even his criticism of the BJP-led NDA came in a measured tone. He said the NDA talked about privatisation, stock markets and divisive policies, but never about the common man. They (NDA) raise religious issues or ask why people from Uttar Pradesh come to Mumbai, but do little for the "aam aadmi", he alleged. Giving a certificate of good governance to PM Manmohan Singh, he said several schemes were launched in the last five years keeping the common man in mind. Chavan thanked Rahul for entrusting him with the "difficult job" of leading Maharashtra after the 26/11 terror attacks. He also assured Rahul that the state would provide the maximum number of seats to the UPA. Former home minister Shivraj Patil and MPCC chief Manikrao Thakre were the other speakers, but ex-CM Vilasrao Deshmukh was absent
